World's tallest building opens in Dubai

Anyone taking holidays to Dubai in 2010 will be able to marvel at the completed Burj Dubai tower - the tallest building in the world.

People with a little extra cash to splash may want to enjoy the new building first hand and book a room in the Armani hotel housed within its walls.

This is the fashion house's first hotel and is set to be followed by another in Italy's style capital Milan, with further Armani resorts planned for cities around the world.

The first guests will be welcomed on March 18th 2010, with online bookings being taken from the end of January.

Armani Hotel Dubai is described by its operators as "the most exclusive destination in the city".

The tower is 828 metres high and has 160-inhabited floors, although AFP reported that there are a further 40 storeys in the building.

In addition to the new hotel, it will also host 49 floors of office space and more than 1,000 apartments.

The Burj Khalifa 'will help put Dubai on the map'

The opening of Burj Khalifa in Dubai, the world's tallest tower, will help make the city stand out in the region, one travel expert has said.

Lonely Planet travel editor Tom Hall commented that Dubai has built a reputation as a destination for "outlandish things".

"You look at the Burj Dubai, it fits quite nicely to that plan - it's brash and it's out there and it's in your face," he said.

Mr Hall added that laying claim to the tallest building in the world can help put a city "on the map" and cited the example of the Petronas Towers in Kuala Lumpur which have attracted droves of tourists.

The observation deck in the tower sits on the 124th floor, making it the highest in the world.

Burj Dubai, which opened to the public on January 5th, now holds three records for its height to the tip, height to the architectural top and height to the highest occupied floor.

It is easily accessible thanks to the number of cheap flights to Dubai on offer, with the terminal hoping to reflect the emirate's "rich heritage" as a maritime hub.
